How I’m Beating Google’s Panda Update For All My Blogs

On November 14th, I had a little scare. Two of my blogs that had been sitting at number 1 for months took sudden drops in the search rankings and their monthly earnings dropped too. This was the date Google rolled out the Panda 2.5.2 algorithm change. It was less than awesome. Luckily, I run a lot of blogs and have a bunch of friends who do too, so we compared notes to try to figure out what caused the issue and I have been able to stage a nice comeback against Panda for those two sites.

Here’s What I Did To Beating Google’s Panda Update For All My Blogs :

Since this algorithm change from Google was designed to weed out duplicate content, thin sites, and sites that were manipulating anchor text to achieve rankings, the changes were pretty simple to make and required no special tools or expensive strategies — just a little bit of work.

Add More Content
The first thing I did was write more content. These two blogs were pretty thin — only a few pages each. Normally, I would have written more for them, but they ranked so quickly with limited content that I just left them alone to earn. Reinvesting some of my profits to make the blogs more useful helped.

Build Deep Links
Secondly, I started building links to deep pages, not just the home page. When the new content was published, I linked directly to it.

Vary Anchor Text
Third, when building these (and other) links, I varied my anchor text a lot. These two blogs were over-weighted with exact match anchor text. If they were blogs about blue widgets, nearly all the anchor text pointing to them was with the words “blue widgets.” Now I added some links using generic terms like, “this blog” and “great information.” I also used related terms that weren’t an exact match for my primary keyword and some links using the actual URL as anchor text. Mix it up so it looks natural.

Does Where You Drop Links Matter?
I used a private blog network to drop the majority of my links, but any method for dropping links should work. I also did some directory submissions, but be careful not to use the same exact wording for these types of submissions, since the links could be discounted if they are seen as duplicate content by Google.

Anyway, I know that a lot of people have struggled with the Panda update and lots of people are selling info on how to beat this algorithm changed. I described it as “SEO Ninjas” and “SEO Samurai.”

The ninjas are sometimes shady, hide in shadows, and play tricks. While the samurai think about honor, class, and quality.

The SEO Ninjas are constantly worried about algorithm changes, tools, and tricks. When things like the panda update or the new freshness update happen they usually get screwed. That’s what happens when you only think about the “tomorrow game” of looking at how to game the Google algorithm. Instead the samurai pays attention to the long term game of understanding what Google wants.

I have been practicing the same things in SEO for almost 3 years now. Very little has changed in the day to day tasks I practice for my SEO results. I don’t pay attention to the updates, I pay attention to what Google wants.

Fresh, human written, entertaining, useful, and educational content that is good enough to make people want to share it with their friends. That’s what Google wants to display.

When you help Google do their job they help you do yours by ranking you higher.

If you want to get off of the SEO treadmill of constantly keeping up with the Google updates, then start learning to be like the samurai instead of the ninja. It’s more work on the front end but much easier and productive in the long run. But then again I just said to take the hard route instead of the easy route. Not a whole lot of people understand that hard gains today for easy gains tomorrow is a better way of life.
